Arunachal: BJP has 48 MLAs in 60 Members Assembly

After the BJP wrested the Pakke-Kessang and Likabali seats in Arunachal Pradesh from the Congress as the results of the December 21 by-elections were announced on Sunday, the two newly-elected BJP MLAs took oath as members of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

As per the reports, Assembly Speaker TN Thongdok administered the oath to BR Waghe. B.R. Waghe of the BJP won in Pakke-Kessang by 475 votes, defeating his lone Congress rival, Kameng Dolo, a former Deputy Chief Minister, counting for which was held on December 24th. In Likabali, Kardo Nyigyor of the BJP won by 305 votes, defeating Gumke Riba of the PPA. Mr. Nyigyor got 3,461 votes and. Mr Riba got 3,156 votes. Congress candidate Modam Dini polled 362 votes and Independent Sengo Taipodia 675. Twenty-three voters opted for NOTA.

In the by-poll, 68.5 percent electors cast their votes. Pakke-Kessang recorded 86 percent of total voting and Likabali marked for 51 percent voting in the December 21 by-elections. The win in the by-poll has made BJP get 48 MLAs in the 60-member House. Nine members of PPA (People’s Party of Arunachal), one from the Congress party and two Independent members.

Likabali fell vacant after the then Health and Family Welfare Minister, Jomde Kena, died on September 4. Pakke-Kessang fell vacant after the Gauhati High Court declared the election of Mr. Dolo in 2014 void. The court gave the ruling on a petition filed by BJP nominee and former Minister Atum Welly.

Earlier, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu had called the victory a Christmas gift to the BJP.
