Central Government Seals Approval for Shillong-Tura Highway, State Government’s Efforts Admired
- The prime minister dedicated the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road to the nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the capital city of Shillong on Saturday. The prime minister dedicated the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road to the nation. He also announced road projects worth Rs 90,000 crore for the North East in the next two to three years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highway at an official programme at Polo Grounds at Shillong and later addressed BJP’s ‘Rally for Change’ at Polo 5th Ground. To witness the presence of the Prime Minister, a huge crowd was gathered at the venue in which many of whom had come from as far as Raksamgre in Garo Hills. PM Modi said that the Shillong-Tura project will enhance the connectivity within the state and it would also serve as the east-west corridor for Meghalaya.
Prime Minister Modi while addressing the crowd said, “The two-laning of Shillong-Nongstoin section of NH-106 and Nongstoin-Tura stretch of NH-127B will establish a link between the two important towns of Shillong and Tura”. PM Modi further added, “For the next 2-3 years, road projects with an investment of over Rs 60,000 crore have been proposed under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in the region. Besides, Rs 30,000 crore will be given under the Bharatmala project in the next two to three years to build a network of highways and roads in the Northeast.”
CM MUKUL SANGMA’S WORK GOT THE APPROVAL FROM PM MODI
The state government was working on this project for the last six years. The agreement to execute the work was made on February 21, 2011, but the actual work started in November the same year. The approval to commence the project had come in the UPA rule and it took around six years to get the project done by the state government. The project till now, cost around 2,300 crores and has completed the length of 264 km.
Speaking to the people associated with the project we got to know that the labourers had been to the site even while it used to rain, to get the work completed within the desired time-frame, for which the people of Garo Hills have applauded the state government. It must be noted that the people used to travel through Assam to reach Garo Hills. The Shillong-Tura highway was declared the National Highway in the year 2004.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya applauded the efforts of UPA government as well as the present central government. The CM said, “Placing on record, express my deep gratitude to Madam Sonia ji & Sh. Rahul ji for sanctioning the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura Road project. I thank PM Modi for his seal of approval to the project and also laud the commendable work done by the PWD & other departments leading to the realisation of this road. This project will improve connectivity, bring countless opportunities & become the catalyst for all-round, inclusive development of the state“.
Meanwhile, the joint efforts of the present state government with the UPA government and the current central government have been proved to be a boon for the people of Meghalaya.
