Himachal Elections: NRI Defeats Anurag Thakur’s Father-in-law

On Monday, Prakash Rana from Gulvan village of Mandi district, who grew up in the village and later settled in Saudi Arabia to establish Million dollar business is a first-timer in electoral politics, gave a shot into prominence and defeated the former minister Gulab Singh Thakur, a BJP stalwart and BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s father-in-law.

Rana is said to have scripted the big loss of Anurag’s father and former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal, won Jogindernager constituency with a huge margin of 6,635 votes.

Rana was an independent candidate who returned from Saudi Arabia after 30 years to live in his village. Rana, surprised by his winning, said that he returned to the native place just to fulfill the dreams of his father, Prem Rana, who was an Army-man.

Rana said that he was forced to contest the election to uplift the development and fulfill his father’s dream. He said, “I have returned to serve the people of my village, leaving my son to take care of my business. I have donated 10% of my earnings from the day I began earning”.

While speaking to the villagers in Gulvan, it got into the picture that Rana returned home some two years back and since then, he has assisted locals in various ways. He has helped them understand the ways of building roads, providing financial aid for getting girls from poor families married, and organising sports tournaments for the youth.

PRAKASH RANA LIVES A LAVISH LIFE IN HIS VILLAGE

Rana has got himself a large mansion built for his family in his village and a private helipad is also built near his residence. He is said to have a helicopter and a fleet of cars, that even includes a Mercedes. As per the people of his village, he commutes between New Delhi and his village by helicopter. Rana said, “I am not contesting for money, but for development of my area”.

 One of Rana’s relatives,  while speaking to the media said that Rana has his own ventures in the transportation sector, the travel industry, and a jewellery business. The winner owns hotels, jewellery showrooms and long-haul transportation vehicles. As per the affidavit he submitted, he has got movable assets of Rs 16.9 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 3.91crore.
