Meghalaya with 8 Other States, Get 167 Crore Border Fund

As per an official report released on Tuesday, Meghalaya has been one of the nine states with the international border that have received Rs 167 crore from the Home Ministry. The fund has been released for the development of infrastructure in forward areas.

One of the officials said, besides Meghalaya, the other states that are going to get the fund are Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Sikkim, Tripura, Assam, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal. The fund is being provided under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP). It must be mentioned that the BADP programme which is totally funded by the Centre, covers all villages which are located within 0-10 km of the international border in 17 states.
Meanwhile, the priority would be given to those villages which would be identified by the border guarding forces for the speedy development of infrastructure.

BADP includes the schemes that would incorporate activities which are related to the cleanliness mission, skill development programmes, promotion of sports activities, promotion of rural tourism, border tourism and protection of heritage sites in the area. It also includes the construction of helipads in remote and inaccessible hilly areas that have got no road connectivity, skill development training to farmers for the use of the modern and scientific technique to enhance farming, organic farming.

States like Rajasthan and Punjab share the border with Pakistan, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya share their borders with Bangladesh. On the other hand, Bihar shares border with Nepal while Sikkim shares the border with Nepal and Bhutan and Himachal Pradesh share the border with China.

In the past, the Home Ministry had given the fund of Rs 174 crore to six states having international border under the same programme of BADP.
