Meghalaya Polls: Sutnga, Cajee to Contest on NPP’s Tickets

To contest for upcoming elections 2018 from South and North Shillong constituencies, the National People’s Party (NPP) has announced the names of its candidates. The party has also announced the dates of the election rally which is going to be held on January 04. Also, eight MLAs from other parties including the independent candidates will join its fold.

The State President of NPP, W.R. Kharlukhi announced the names of Sounder Cajee and Erwin Sutnga as its candidates on Wednesday who would be contesting the election from South and North Shillong respectively. He did express his confidence that the NPP would gain strength in Shillong which the party had initially thought otherwise.

Kharlukhi said, “We are gaining strength in Shillong and everyone knows it and so we will be fielding more candidates in Shillong”.

Further, Kharlukhi also informed about the list 8 MLAs who would be joining the NPP. The list includes former Congress ministers Rowell Lyngdoh, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Comingone Ymbon and Prestone Tynsong, UDP MLA Remington Pyngrope, Congress legislator Ngaitlang Dhar and the Independent MLAs Stephenson Mukhim and Hopeful Bamon.

The NPP state president added that the Chief Ministerial candidate of NPP would be elected by the MLAs that prevail in the two regions, Garo and Khasi Hills. When the NPP state president was asked about the number of seats the party is contesting from, Kharlukhi said “We are contesting in more than 50 seats,” and also added that the party would not contest in all 60 seats for strategic reasons.Kharlukhi also stated that their sole motive is to defeat the Congress.

He said, “Going by the political history, I don’t see that the Congress will revive or rebuild. We will ensure that the Congress stays in single digit in this election.”

As per the NPP State President, the party would be announcing the full list of contestants by second week of January next year.
