Mizoram: Hmar People Celebrate Sikpui Ruoi With Fanfare

The Hmar people in Mizoram on Friday celebrated ‘Sikpui Ruoi’, one of the greatest and most revered festivals of the Hmars which the people of Hmar community celebrate with the great enthusiasm and fanfare. For the Hmar people, this festival marks for the happiness and joy.

 

Hmar people cloaked in Hmar traditional attire gathered at the Art & Culture Auditorium at Berawtlang on the outskirt of Aizawl to celebrate the prime festival. The festival was organized by the Hmar Inpui, Mizoram region. The event had been graced by the Hmar Inpui President Joseph Lalrothang as Sikpui Pa or father or the festival, in easy words, the chief guest of the festival.

The celebration was a day long and the programme started with a Thanksgiving programme, in which the retired Presbyterian pastor Rev. Zualthuama administered an invocation and dedicated the festival to the glory of God. While speaking the Hmar people on the occasion, Sikpui Pa Lalrothang expressed his gratitude for Sikpui Ruoi being celebrated in Mizoram and said that many of the Hmar tribes have forgotten their rich culture and past history of the tribes. He said, “The celebration of Sikpui festival in Mizoram indeed is very great and decent as the current year is a good and productive year for the Hmars in Mizoram with peace talks between the state government and HPC(D) nearing to conclusion with positive solution”. He also requested the Hmar people to become the boulevard of blessing and glorification for the Mizo nation.

 

There was a costume parade during the first session of the festival in which children and models showcased Hmar traditional costumes. On the occasion, a number of Hmar artistes and Leltaward-winning choir Aizawl EFCI choir also performed. Three Hmar leaders namely LH Thanga, Dr. Siamhnuna and J. Laldinliana were honoured for their extraordinary contribution towards the Hmar society, during the first half of the session. The second session of the festival witnessed the cultural and entertainment programmes, in which various artists from the Hmar community spellbound the gathering with their traditional songs. The Hmar cultural dances were performed by Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), Vairengte.

 

The Sikpui festival is considered as the most important festival of the Hmars and it is celebrated mostly in the winters. It is also referred as harvest festival, and it is not celebrated every year. The fact prevails is, it gets celebrated only in the year of abundant harvest or good year when there would be no death and chaos throughout the year. Sikpui Ruoi was first celebrated in the year 1996, in Aizawl.
