Aizawl: In yet another drug smuggling, Police officials have seized 1.41 kilograms of heroin in Mizoram and a Myanmar’s national has been arrested in the connection.
According to Aizawl district SP Neihchungnunga, the heroin was seized from the possession of the man from Myanmar in Aizawl yesterday.
The 56-year-old man has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The probe is on in the matter.
Northeast region and its drug cases are always a topic of discussion. According to a report, Over 1,400 people have died due to drug abuse in Mizoram since 1984 when the first drug-related death due to heroin was detected in the state. This was highlighted in the consultative meeting on the drug menace organized by the central committee of Young Mizo Association (Central YMA).
Central YMA vice president Vanlaruata said that at least 1,456 people, including 156 females, have died due to drug abuse in last 34 years since 1984 till July 2017 in Mizoram. There are 10 renowned drug peddlers in Mizoram and 8 smugglers from Myanmar who are smuggling drugs to Mizoram. Some of them have been arrested five to six times.
The government, as well as civil societies and churches, should come forward to concertedly combat drug menace in the state, he added.
