- Lok Sabha MP Rio meets Rajnath amid talks about deferring of polls
- The meeting was held in New Delhi on Friday evening where Rio expressed the desire of Naga people for ‘solution before election’.
Nagaland MP to the Lok Sabha Neiphuo Rio on Friday evening in New Delhi, the 12th of January 2017 met the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav along with former State BJP president, Dr. M. Chuba Ao to impress upon the aspiration of the Naga people for ‘solution before the upcoming election’. The ruling party NPF is a constituent of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and has been in power since 2003.
According to a press note from the MP’s office, Rio elaborately explained the chronology of events of the Naga issue which led to its current crucial stage.
Rio also explained that the majority of the stakeholders were part of the peace talks and thus this was the right time for rectifying the decades-old Naga political issue. Rio also acknowledged the authentic concern and efforts of the Government of India towards finding an ethical settlement to the Naga political problem whilst ‘respecting the Constitution of the country and its electoral obligations’.
Rio also further informed that the Nagaland Government had been sending delegations to Myanmar to meet the NSCN(K) leadership as the faction had abrogated the ceasefire agreement with the Government of India in 2015, to convince them to re-join the process of peace talks for an early solution.
The tenure of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly expires on the 13th of March, 2017 and there might be an imposition of President’s Rule in case of deferment of polls.
