The whole world celebrated Christmas on December 25, this is the holy day when Jesus Christ was born and shared his message to the mankind. As the Northeastern part of the country is having Christianity as their religion in most of the states, this day was celebrated with great joy. The largest Church of Asia situated in Nagaland has observed its first ever Christmas.
All about Sumi Baptist Church
Sumi Baptist Church of Nagaland is considered to be Asia’s largest church. The magnificent church sits on a hill over Zunheboto, a town in Nagaland.
The Church has witnessed its first Christmas, this year where the people gathered to observe the celebration of the day.
The egg-shaped church has a sitting capacity of 8,500 with 27 rooms. The blue dome and white turrets of the Sumi Baptist Church can be seen by around 20 villages in Zunheboto district alone.
The largest church in Asia was designed at a cost of 36 crores, with the help of more than 2000 workers. The construction of the church took about 10-11 years after that this huge structure was ready to pray for the people of Nagaland and others as well.
The Sumi Baptist Church was designed by Architect Honoholi K Chishi-Zhimomi, of the firm Akitektura. She created history by designing this majestic structure.
The architect who created this beautiful structure said, “This Zunheboto Church was designed 13 years ago and construction has been going on for 10 to 11 years. So it has been a very long project but a good one. Now, when I look back especially at the design and how everyone is happy, it makes me very happy to hear all the good input and feedback”.
Adding to this she also said, “It is truly an inspiration from God. It is his house and I am very privileged to have had the opportunity to design such a wonderful building for God, and I must say that the inspiration truly comes from God”.
Apart from Nagaland other states of Northeast India also celebrated the day with great joy. On this day, people wish each other and attend the prayers at the church and visit each others house to wish the day and during this, they exchange cakes and sweets with each other.
The last week of December is celebrated by the people around the globe and the celebration starts from Christmas when people sing Christmas Carols and visit each other’s place to wish them for the coming year.
