Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore revealed government’s plan to build India’s first dedicated sports development institute in Manipur.
“We are on the verge of setting up a Sports University in Manipur,” said the minister at the launch of ELMS Sports Foundation event on Tuesday. “The university will bring faculty from countries such as Australia and Japan, who will bring along their expertise of developing the sports and upcoming generation of players.”
The union government has already sanctioned an amount of Rs 100 crore for building the university in the North-eastern state.
Earlier Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had inspected infrastructure at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, where the said sports university is proposed.
The recently-appointed Sports Minister also felt that the country requires privatization of stadium for better handling of the sports event and players. “I think there needs to be an initiative taken for private stadiums in the country. Private bodies are more apt at handling a major sports event and also taking good care of the athletes,” said the Olympic silver medallist.
Talking about the ELMS initiative to train the coaches from the grassroots, Rathore feels the initiative will help in nurturing the talent of the future to be trained at a high level from the beginning. “Congratulations to ELMS, along with Abhinav (Bindra) and Pullela (Gopichand), for initiating this programme of training the Physical education teachers and coaches of school level. They will help developing body from a very small age in a scientific manner. This will result in future champions emerging from our country,” he said.
Former Olympic gold medallist Bindra and Indian badminton coach Gopichand were among those present on Tuesday.
