Opposition indulged in a verbal spat

The Tripura Assembly is having the last session before the Assembly Polls in the state in 2018. This is a two-day winter session that started on Monday.

On the first day of the session, the opposition was indulged in a verbal spat with the CPIM-led ruling government.

The Assembly was rocked up when the issue of murder of the Journalist of the local TV channel, Shantanu Bhowmick was uplifted.

Along with this, the arrest of militant outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) Chief Ranjit Debbarma for his alleged inflammatory speech was also a matter of debate during the session.

During this session, the opposition parties of the state countered the CPIM-led state government and raised questions on the law and order situation in the state as the state is under insurgency for a long time.

One of the reasons of this insurgency was the murder of the local TV Journalist Shantanu Bhowmick who was thrashed by the mob and beaten to death when he was gone to cover the insurgency between the two insurgent groups of the state.

Santanu’s murder shook the state as well as the nation as this was the incident happened just after the murder of Gauri Lankesh, a journalist from Bangalore.

The investigation of the Shantanu Bhaomick’s murder case is under the police of the state and they are probing into the matter.

Police has arrested many in the case of thrashing Shantanu and according to the police, at least 10-12 people were involved in the matter.

In a statement, DGP of Police Akhil Kumar Shukla said, “Three people involved with Shantanu’s murder have already been arrested and the court sent them to police remand after an identification parade.”

Press Jacket introduced by the police

After the incidence of thrashing the Journalist and beting him  to death, Tripura Police officially distributed a special jacket to every print and electronic media house based in Agartala.

Keeping in view of the safety and proper identification of the journalists, while covering an insurgency or any other critical situation in the region, Tripura Police has come up with this initiative.

On the occasion, DGP Shukla said that this jacket would be helpful in identifying the media persons among the mobs and huge public gatherings.

Earlier, there were incidents where media persons were attacked by the mob including the police officials, he said.

Shukla further informed about the confusion that erupts during protests and rallies in the region due to the mass gathering in the region.

The reason why police of the state came up with the idea of distributing the jackets to the people related to the media. The aim of the police is to highlight the media persons for their safety while covering the insurgency.
