The Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) scheme launched by Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma earlier this month has provided Rs 5000 to a large number of women as seed money according to a senior official of Community and Rural Development Department (CnRD).
This is a financial inclusion scheme which seeks to benefit about four lakh, women-headed families.
Subsequently, after the launch, Rs 5000 cheque countersigned by the Block Development Officers were given to thousands of eligible beneficiaries, as according to the senior CnRD official.
National People’s Party (NPP) spokesperson, James k. Sangma although appreciating the scheme had some reservations regarding its timing and the finance part of the scheme. He questioned as to why the Govt wasted five years to take out the programme. He was also doubtful as the Govt appeared to be under severe financial crisis, however, it was at the same time distributing freebies in the form of money.
Expressing similar views, state BJP president, Shibun Lyngdoh said that during the 15 years of rule, the Govt had not done anything but fooled the people all the time.
Saleng A. Sangma, an independent legislator had petitioned the Governor four months back regarding the scheme asserting that it was more of a burden rather than empowering the women folks as MGNREGS wages deposited in the bank accounts of the women folks were being subtracted to repay the loans which they had never taken.
Denying all allegations leveled against the ruling Govt, CM Sangma stated that the state Govt since long time back has taken large-scale social mobilization to make potential beneficiaries aware of the schemes and that the BDO’s are working on who should be the beneficiaries. Also countering the opposition, CM Sangma said that the mandate for the government is for five years and that constitutionally and legally, the government is bound to work and every minute and every hour counts.
